C-Squared: Competition and Clients of the future in financial market
In April, concluding over 18 months of research, the IBM Institute for Business Value will release the final report on one of its most comprehensive research projects to date, the future of financial services industry globally. With a team of 60 researchers worldwide, the Institute for Business Value (IBV) continually researches critical industry and cross-industry trends to provide strategic insights to clients and IBM senior executives.
What value is added by the financial services industry? At a time when the global economy has been shaken by the financial crisis, this is more than just a philosophical question. Over the next three years, firms will learn how to operate in an increasingly competitive environment. Competition will heighten on four fronts: competition for capital, clients, talent and ultimately competition for sustainable returns. Firms can no longer afford to respond with rigid and complex organizational structures – structures that hinder the ability to capture emerging profit pools. In order to win in the new competitive landscape, firms must learn to identify the client of the future and specialize around what this client values.
Industry executives have asked for answers to fundamental questions about the future of financial services. These questions form the basis for our research:
- How must firms redesign their organizations to win?
- Which forces will disrupt the industry landscape?
- What will clients pay for?
- How will the bases for competition change?
- What steps must firms take today to win?
- How will regulation and Commoditization influence the industry over the next 3 years?
- What will be the design elements of the competitive landscape?
